Phase 2: Preparing USB Drive
- Format USB drive as exFAT (supports files >4 GB).
- Create folder structure:
\CNT\(for NBT) or\NAVDB\(for MGU) — varies by iDrive version. - Extract downloaded files directly to USB root or target folder.
Step 4: Prepare the USB Drive
- Format: The USB drive must be formatted to exFAT or NTFS (FAT32 does not support files larger than 4GB, and BMW map files are huge).
- Layout: Extract the downloaded
.zipfile directly to the root of the USB drive. Do not put it inside a folder. The drive should contain a folder namedCN(China),NA(North America), orECE(Europe) depending on your region.
2.2 Hardware Requirements
- USB 3.0 drive with minimum 64 GB capacity (for full region maps, e.g., North America or Europe).
- File system: exFAT or FAT32 (NTFS not supported).
- PC or Mac with broadband internet (≥50 Mbps recommended).
Step 2: Where to Legally Download the Map Update
Do not use torrents. Corrupted files can brick your navigation unit. Use the official sources: Format USB drive as exFAT (supports files >4 GB)
For vehicles with a valid subscription: Go to the BMW Update Manager (formerly the Download Manager). Log in with your VIN (last 7 characters).
For vehicles without a subscription: You must purchase a map update from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. Prices range from $30 to $120 USD depending on region.
Pro tip: If you have a BMW produced after July 2019, you may be eligible for "Remote Software Upgrade." Check your My BMW App first. If an OTA update is pending, you do not need a manual download.
